Happiness Helps Us Live Longer

Happiness 3

Happiness feels good, looks good and also allows us to live a better quality and much longer life. Research at the University of Missouri has come up with a formula for happiness! They use a measure called “Subjective Well Being” (SWB).

SWB =  HIGH Positive Mood + LOW Negative Mood + HIGH Life Satisfaction (As self reported since it is SUBJECTive Well Being)
All 3 typically move in tandem (trandem?)

Is SWB Real?   YES

-Self reports agree with family and friends
-Happy people have better and longer marriages
-Happy people have more career success and income
-Happy people live longer!

The researchers codified positive emotions from diaries of nuns in the 1930’s, the nuns were in their mid 20’s. The researchers could predict the lifespan of the nuns based on their happiness (SWB).

Happiness 2
The Amazing Results:
Most cheerful (top quarter) of nuns:  A staggering 90% were still alive at age 85!
Least cheerful (bottom quarter) of nuns: Only 34% were still alive at age 85!
So get happy!

Increasing Your Self Acceptance / Self Worth

Finding/Increasing Your Self-Acceptance/ Self -Worth
From the fabulous “Get Out of Your Own Way” book by Dr. RuskOnce concern about self worth is set aside, awareness of your mortality will help make each moment more valuable.

“I didn’t ask to be here, but here I am anyway. And I’m not going to be here forever. I’ve been given inherited talents and weaknesses. I had no say about my genetic capacities. I’m a product of my past- my inheritance and my experiences. I can’t change that. However., I do have some say about how I act now.

I am not who I was years ago, I am not who I may be sometime in the future, and I may not be who others want me to be. I’m not even who I have believed I am. Like it or not, I am exactly who I am. And I’d like to find out who that is and who I could grow to become.

I do have some choices and because I do, I can chose to take risks and experiment to find out what I’m capable of. I can try on different attitudes that seem to offer more than my familiar attitudes. I can behave differently, in new ways that seem preferable to my habits.

I will concentrate on my strengths, instead of trying to hide or compensate for my weaknesses. The only way I can discover what I have to offer is by exploring various activities. It’s up to me to locate my wellsprings of talent. I can experiment until I find those pursuits that make me feel better about myself and come to me more readily than other activities.

And since I have control over how I do whatever I’m doing, why not do the best I can? Maybe what I do and what I accomplish is less important than how I do it. Perhaps it is less important to do the right things that to do things for the right reasons. I’ll earn self-respect automatically. And the more difficult the thing I try to accomplish, the more self respect I’ll earn.

If I’m good enough to succeed at something I feel good about, then not only will I earn self-respect, I’ll also feel fulfilled. If I fail despite my best efforts, I’ll still have self-respect.”

2014 Go For It!

2014 Go for It!
Last week looked at finding out our wins and challenges for the year 2013. Now we will look forward always in the objective of creating a compelling future that jazzes US (no one else!). I’ve included a few

1) In terms of each of the following life areas, rank your level of satisfaction RIGHT Now (in this moment, don’t over-analyze) with that area in your life 1 to 10 where 1 means that area is completely unsatisfactory to 10 being completely and utterly over the moon.
Satisfaction (Out of /10)
My Relationship with family                __
My Realtionship friends                        __
Significant Other                                       __
Fun and Recreation                                  __
Health                                                             __
Money                                                            __
Career                                                            __
Personal Growth                                       __
Physical Environment                            __

So any areas at or below a “5” should definately be focused on for you to live a fulfilling life in 2014.

2) Look forward to the end of 2014, you are writing out what an incredible year it was.
You begin:

  1. Imagine that it is one year from now – you’re feeling especially gratified and thankful. You are looking back over the past year with a sense of satisfaction and pride. It has been a fabulous year of growth and personal achievement – a year that spoke to your heart. You sit down to write a letter to your closest friends, describing the year,
  2. What are the highlights? You begin: “This has been a most extraordinary year for me…”

What are the obstacles you had to overcome?
There is an underlying theme for the whole year – a thread that was woven through it all. What was that thread?
Who did you have to be in order to get to that place?

3) What experiences on your bucket list will you endeavour to experience/accomplish?

These should get you started!

A Real Hero

Fantastic Spoken Word on building your own career vs JOB (just over Broke):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tzcxOl4b7IA

****

I challenge you to keep a dry eye after reading this, no offence to the stars, but we do tend to deify athletes, movie and rock stars. Thanks Ruth D. for passing this to me.

True Hero

And think of the media circus, flags at half staff, and all the things that were said of Whitney Houston when she died and Michael Jackson when he died. This hero died with barely anyone’s notice.
“Shifty” By Chuck Yeager

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn’t know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the “Screaming Eagle,” the symbol of  the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he’d been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said “Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 …” at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said “I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . do you know where Normandy is?” At this point my heart stopped.

I told him “Yes, I know exactly where Normandy is, and I know what D-Day was.” At that point he said “I also made a second jump into Holland , into Arnhem ..” I was standing with a genuine war hero …and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of  D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said  “Yes… And it ‘s real sad because, these days, so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can’t make the trip.” My heart was in my throat and I didn’t know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in coach while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I’d take his in coach.

He said “No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and who still care is enough to make an old man very happy.” His eyes were filling up as he said it.

And mine are brimming up now as I write this.
Shifty died on Jan. l7 after fighting cancer.
There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center .

No wall-to-wall, back-to-back 24×7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that’s not right!

Let’s give Shifty his own memorial service, online, in our own quiet way.

Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

Chuck Yeager, Maj. General [ret.]

P.S. I think that it is amazing how the “media” chooses our “heroes” these days…

Elvis, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston & the like.

“SHIFTY” – an incredible American hero.

Please do me a favor and pass this on so that untold thousands can read it.

We owe no less to our REAL Heroes.

I hope this touched you as much as did me.

The Key to making a Great Decision Every Time

How do we know when to take that leap make an important decision: either “go” or “no go”?

For most of us it’s torture and then guilt and many false starts wasting time and vibrational, psychological and emotional energy.

Here’s a foolproof way to make sure you’re making the right decisions in the right way so that you take the right ones and avoid the wrong ones that won’t work anyway (because they scare you subconsciously, fear attracts failure).

First get down to what the worst case scenario of the decision is. Most of us don’t want to go there, we don’t want to worry about that or don’t want to focus there but the fear ends up running us. Be 100% honest with yourself most of us sugar coat with ourselves, “It will be fine” is not a powerful strategy.

Here’s an example from my life to apply this: I had to do a book signing yesterday and I was little nervous about it, as it was the first time I do this sort of thing. So I thought about the worst case scenario. In my case, the worst case scenario was “I won’t sell one book at all I was a complete  failure and I was never invited back to the store that invited me and worse than that, they would’ve maybe sent an email to head office or other stores to avoid me.”

Now yes it that was very scary for me but I knew that I had to learn how to do this and this is a new channel for me (book signings at stores) and I I was prepared to fail miserably at it.. The mistake most people make at this point is not digging deep enough and really going to worst-case scenarios. For example if you’re about to launch a new product what’s the worst case scenario? Most marketing people tell you: “the worst case scenario is that we will sell 50% of what our target is.” We need to dig deeper.

Here is my first book store signing sale!

That’s not really the worst case scenario, it’s too rosy. The absolute worst case scenario is: you spend months developing the product spending on its development, packaging, making sure the packaging is good and then you fill up your warehouses with the product, you promote it and not one item sells. That is the absolute worst thing that could happen.

That’s why they’re called worst-case scenario not medium-case scenario but most people are afraid to look at the absolute worst case because they think it looks like a failure. Failure is and not admitting what the worst case is possible.

Counter-intuitively perhaps, once you’re really really comfortable that is the absolute worst thing that could happen including impacts to your reputation, your cash flow and your ego then comes the fun part: What is the best case scenario?

So in my case the best case scenario was that I would hit it out of the park and sell over 20 books at my book signing and impress everybody, feel great make, make some money and impress the store and have them send a letter to head office or other store say how great I was.

Now obviously the reality is somewhere in between the two of those but most the time our minds won’t allow us to go to the worst case scenario. If you’re still okay with the worst case scenario happening in terms of your growth, in terms of the opportunity that it presents and you’re okay with that then you can definitely say: “Let’s do this thing and put all of your horsepower (intellectually psychologically) and your belief that it’s going to work and just do it with all your passion (#2 on the Emotional Scale). Once you confront the fear, you break through and can succeed.

Just to wrap things up in my personal example I didn’t end up selling the 20 books. But I didn’t also end up selling zero books either.
I sold somewhere in between those two numbers . But it went well, I was happy the way I was dealing with people and I had fun.

The store Customer Experience Manager was happy and we are discussing doing a book writing workshop. The result was better than my best case scenario actually in this case.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cheri Gibson from Indigo Books Milton. She was absolutely a superstar yesterday helping me feel great having a great first day signing and was incredibly supportive in and allowing me to to learn this and helped me shine. So I’m really appreciative of all of her support. If you’re in the Milton area, drop in and go say hi to Cheri. She’s probably one of the best customer Experience Manager’s I’ve ever met.

For all your great projects, go to the worst-case scenario, keep digging make sure it’s as bad as it can be. Then look at the best case scenario and then if you can handle the worst case scenario pull the trigger do it and never look back. Just do it, remember a good decision today beats a great decision next week all the time. You get the benefit of time and experience of doing it.

Tips to Avoid Flu Season

As the fall advances one sure sign of winter is the arrival of the flu “bug” foisting misery on the many. As I covered extensively in my first book “Killing Yourself With Your Fork” (e-book is now $5! Via email), the healthy human body has very little chance to be “infected” no matter how virulent or extensive is the outbreak.

Many well meaning health care providers have forgotten that “the terrain is everything, the pathogen is nothing.” As Louis Pasteur finally admitted on his death bed. Many experiments aiming to infect healthy bodies with all number of pathogens all failed to infect a healthy body. The healthy human body’s immune system is simply too powerful and destroys any invaders.

One of the primary reasons so many people get sick in the holiday season is lifestyle-related, we do it to ourselves. What do we do in the holidays? We over-eat, over drink, over stress, under exercise creating the terrain for all manner of infection by colds and flu. Here are some ideas to stay healthy through the critical next 6 weeks:

1)      Drink copious amounts of water with lemon in it (keeps you alkaline)

2)     Get good amounts of rest (being over-tired taxes the immune system)

3)     Relax and have fun NOT worrying about getting sick (worry and fear lower our vibration)

4)     Be regimented about exercising 3-6 times a week

5)     Get regular sunshine via walks

6)     Take 3000-5000 IU’s of vitamin D aka. the sunshine vitamin (gellules preferable) , keeps your mood upbeat

7)    Take a morning “green drink”, (I prefer Progressive Vege-Greens, no I don’t work for them!) available at all health food stores

8)     Ensure you get large amounts of “good” fats such as almonds, avocado, sunflower seeds

9)     Begin using a daily maxim affirming your heath, “I’m getting healthier and healthier every day!”

10)   Be appreciative of all you have and how good you have it in your life, you are abundant!

November Rain (Tears)

Last Thursday may have been November 1st but for me it was like Christmas Day, My Birthday and a Promotion rolled into one. You see, last Thursday was the day that I picked up 525 copies of my baby book, “Live It!”. I had been more or less making sure before that day that all spare money would go to paying for the books (the life of a self-publisher i tell you…lol). As with all things meant to be, the Universe orchestrated everything absolutely perfectly bringing in exactly the funds I needed within a few dollars!

Back to that day. I woke up with a spring in my step as I sang to myself “This is the day I get/see/touch my books!”. I had even thought of cancelling all other appointments that day but decided that some time away from hyper focussing on “the event” would be good. As I left my last appointment to drive to the book warehouse (where I was told to park in the back and ask for Pat, how very mysterious!), it literally hit me like a ton of books: I would see the culmination of my thoughts, imagination and efforts in a physical product. As a coach and speaker, most of what I do is powerful but not tangible.

As it hit me, tears began pouring down my face at the realization that my “baby book” would finally start being adopted by loving people. The emotion was so strong, a combination of releif, joy, anticipation and a little trepidation (will they like it?). As the men loaded in the 9 boxes of HEAVY books and warned me not to brake too suddenly, it dawned on me, I had done it! I had delivered this book to the world.

A book is tangible and for that it is very special. “Live It!” introduces and explains all my best tools and thinking (in easily understandable language with examples) along with all my hope and passion for others living their greatest lives. It meets you where you are NOW and gives you powerful processes to find your purpose and truth to live authentically and manifest all your greatest wants and desires.

I can sincerely tell you from my heart, this book delivers, it has juice and it will make a huge differnce in so many people’s lives. Last Thursday night after speaking to a crowd, I had the pleasure of autographing many books and loved it so much. A coach author had arrived.

I explained to someone this week, “Buying Live It! is the next best thing to hiring me as your coach!”  It will also make a tremendous Christmas gift.  Buy it here: http://www.quantumleapcoach.ca/books/live-it

“Why Wait Until They Die?”

Happy Halloween to everyone! May that be the only day a year you wear a mask of inauthenticity!

As I was at the gym this week I saw a funeral on television. As the procession advanced, the commentators were piling on the positive achievements and community impact of the gentleman in question.

It occurred to me that many people save all the great things they should tell others for after the person’s death. Now I know this may seem a little extreme, but really, is it?

Other than graduations, weddings and major career promotions, when do we tell the important people around us how much they mean to us? How often do we allow are ego (fear) stop us from telling our loved ones, friends and business partners how important they are in our lives and how amazing they are. I’ve been on this wavelength lately,

I’ve become quite complimentary and upbeat with EVERYONE I meet. From the gentleman and ladies who dutifully clean the lobby every morning as I go for a run. To anyone at any store I go to, anyone in the elevator, people are everywhere and I make it my duty to leave them somehow more joyful and appreciated. Don’t think for a second I am only doing it for them as I get just as much or more out of it than they do.

It’s astonishing (and so sad) how few people actually do walk through life in pure joy and appreciation (children and pets excluded as they know how and chose to feel good all the time).

These vibrations (joy/love/empowerment/freedom/appreciation) are #1 at the top of the emotional scale.

By feeling that good (not waiting for “good” things to happen to you before you are joyful) all the time you attract people, experiences and events that feel that good, this creates a “virtuous” circle. That is all you need to remember to tap into the most senior of all physical laws: the Law of Attraction. The same way the Law of Lift Supercedes the Law of Gravity (otherwise birds and planes wouldn’t fly!), whether you believe in the LoA or not doesn’t change that it works. The same way you don’t need to believe in gravity for it to work.

I dare you this week to shine a ray of sunshine and joy on everyone you meet, you will make their day. You may also make your own!

Appreciation: A Rampage of

The last few weeks have been quite wondrous for me and I am in appreciation of all that I am experiencing. I thought I’d share a few examples as appreciation is #1 on the Emotional Scale!

Peter Gabriel Music Concert:  Phenomenal sounds and visuals created an incredible soundscape of classics. This man is a musical genius.

Cirque Du Soleil Amaluna:  This was my first Cirque experience and I absolutely adored it. The ability of the performers is Olympic quality, the soundtrack uplifting and the coordination and flawless performance are a joy to behold. Worth every generous penny, sometimes premium is worth it.

Hy’s Steakhouse: My lovely partner took me to this steak house for my birthday last week, (September 24th). The food is devine, the décor classic upscale and the service is simply palatial. Being treated to a 5 star meal service is quite impressive. http://www.hyssteakhouse.com/

A Beautiful Wedding:  I was a groomsman at my best friend Chris Partridge married his love, Shannon McGregor at the Knollwood in Ancaster, Ontario. I’ve been to my fair share of weddings, this one was almost a spiritual event. The love of the family, friends and couple electrified the wedding. Beautiful and simple wedding ceremony and evening that focused on connections and love, wonderful memories and touching moments. From the M and M candies with their faces and dates, to walking Shannon’s dog down the aisle. Pictures taken by a photographer that cared, etc. Etc.

This is what you call a rampage of appreciation and it feels and sounds so good. I wish you to go on your own!
